“What else do humans do?” Illyria asked when Wes emerged from the shower, a towel hanging around his waist.

“I told you not to come into my room…”

“I’m sorry. What else do humans do?”

He sighed. “We eat. In fact, I’m hungry right now.”

He walked to the kitchen and she followed him. He narrated his actions as he moved around the kitchen, explaining each detail. “Always use chunky peanut butter…and real jam.”

“Why?”

“It’s better. Cut off the crusts… And then cut the sandwich in half…”

“Why?”

“Just because.”

“Everything is ‘just because’.”

“I know. Now you try.”

Angel worried about everything when it came to his son. Connor was so small…so tiny, delicate and fragile and helpless. What if he hurt him? What if he dropped him? What if he forgot to feed him? But he had the gang to help with that. The bigger worry fell on Angel’s shoulders alone. How could he raise Connor to be a good person? How could he teach his son morals and values and right from wrong? How could he teach the boy anything?

He didn’t realize that Connor was training him—making him a better person day by day.

Spike growled and picked up the phone. He dialed the number quickly—he had already called a million times before but always hung up before anybody could answer. He hated defeat. He hated to admit that he didn’t know what he was doing and he needed help. Especially help from him. How much lower could a vampire sink? Where was his pride? Where had it all gone so horribly wrong? Before or after the man-eating dragon?

He needed to train. So he called the one person who could help him.

“Andrew? Tell me how to beat this bloody video game!”
